My mission is to get you to train better and race faster.

Time is the ultimate constraint for most athletes over 40.
We all have limited time to train.
You have to get the maximum possible benefit out of each training session.

Note: This does NOT mean every training sesssion should be hard!!

If you want to get and stay in racing-shape after 40, you have to pay attention to your training, nutrition and recovery.
This site is the answer.

Especially aimed at Endurance Athletes Over 40

My focus will be on endurance sports.
Athletes over 40, who participate in sports like cycling, running, swimming, rowing, kayaking, adventure racing, moto-cross, trail running, cross-fit - and too many others more to mention, will feel right at home.

Even if yours is not an endurance sport, you will STILL find a lot of value here.
Many of the same principles that apply to endurance sports apply to other sports as well.
Team sports like football, basketball & hockey all benefit from the same physical conditioning principles.
Things like

  • seasonal conditioning,
  • training cycles,
  • aerobic vs anaerobic activity,
  • lactic acid tolerance and
  • many other principles can be transferred between different sporting disciplines.

All (physical) sports will benefit from the nutritional principles discussed.

The 40 plus age categories in most sports are larger these days than they've ever been in the past.

The general population over 40 are in a dismal physical state and yet, there is a growing number of people over 40 who are in great shape and still actively competing.
It does not matter if you are

  • competing internationally (in the open or masters classes),
  • racing at a national or provincial level,
  • taking part in local club races or
  • simply have a friendly rivalry with your training partners.

If you are over 40 and physical performance is important to you – welcome. This site was made with you in mind.

Over time, the resources accumulated on the site should become a "training bible" for endurance athletes over 40.

Why 40 Plus Racing?

I am well past 40 and have always been reasonably active.

Youngsters - Beware.

An almost inevitable (and very welcome) side-effect of being active over 40 is that you tend to mix with similarly sporty people. It is also common to mix (and train) with much younger people. While I firmly believe this is part of what helps keeps us young, there is a downside.

The kind of training, eating, drinking, sleeping patterns of people in their teens, 20s and 30s are not ideal once you hit the 40 plus mark.
More worrying/frustrating is that you will begin to notice differences in your performance and recovery compared to the younger athletes.

Don’t get me wrong – if you’ve been training and racing for many years, the chances are good that most of the youngsters in your group or at your club have to eat your dust.
But I am not talking about most youngsters; I am talking about the youngsters that are “top dogs” in your club, province, country, etc.
Racing against them is another story – and so is training with them.

Training Advice for Athletes Over 40?

I tried to find information tailored explicitly to help improve the performance of athletes over 40 - and struggled.
It seems like we are not a priority to anybody else.
The vast majority of sports science and sports research is focused on Olympic-level athletes or on much older (and generally frail) people, who’ve become a bit more active later in life.

None of this is actually what you’re looking for.
And that is why I built this site.
To provide relevant, actionable advice, views and programs to people over 40 that are still racing and competing.

If you want to:

  • Learn how to improve and maintain your performance.
  • Make sure you get the “best bang for your buck” out of the training sessions you do.
  • Understand what kind of intervals works best - and at which stage in your training program.
